City County Meeting in Alexandria

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners and the Alexandria City Council met for a joint meeting on Monday, October 27.It was an opportunity for the two groups of elected officials to talk about items that affect residents of both the city and the county.
Commissioner Jeff Way asked about taking action to reduce the muddy mess that can occur at the Farmers Market near Big Ole. City Engineer Brian Yavarow answered questions about possible solutions and challenges.
County Engineer and Public Works Director Tim Erickson answered questions about a proposed roundabout at County Road 46 and Pioneer Road. And Commissioner Charlie Meyer asked about the proposal to move the stoplight from 17th Avenue to 18th Avenue on Highway 29 which is owned by MnDOT.
County Emergency Manager Julie Anderson shared that people living above stores in downtown Alexandria, or in other nearby locations with limited options for shelter during a severe storm, will be able to access safety through the lower level of the county services center at 720 Fillmore Street. Those doors will be opened remotely during a tornado warning.
Finally, commissioners and city council members talked about the concept of a Fire District. Currently there are separate fire departments across the county along with medically trained first responders.No action was taken at this meeting. It was informational only.
