At their June 2 meeting, County Commissioners voted to keep an existing rail crossing in Kensington open. The Canadian Pacific Kansas City railroad had expressed interest in closing the crossing on County State Aid Highway 151 citing liability and maintenance issues. Because the crossing is on a county road, the ultimate decision was that of the Douglas County Board. CSAH 151 is also Central Avenue which is in the heart of downtown Kensington. County Public Works Director Tim Erickson and members of his team, and Commissioners Jeff Way and Charlie Meyer met with city leaders to discuss the issue. Members of the public also made numerous phone calls, sent letters and emails requesting it be kept open. Following the vote, the city of Kensington posted on its Facebook page that the city “would like to thank Senator Jordan Rasmusson, the Douglas County Commissioners, and the members of our community who took the time to express their concerns regarding the proposed closure of the Central Avenue railroad crossing in Kensington.” Work to repair the crossing began June 5.
Public Works
Work is also beginning on a multi-use trail on CSAH 46. That trail will run north from the Central Lakes Trail to just short of Highway 29. That takes it past Discovery Middle School. The low bid came in from Joe Riley Construction. The trail will be ten feet wide and is intended for both bicyclists and pedestrians.
Land and Resource Management
Commissioners approved a Conditional Use Permit for Dan O’Brien Properties to build a 60 foot by 300-foot steel storage building for boat and pontoons. The plan also calls for the outdoor storage of boat lifts. The property is located in Carlos Township on County Road 42.
Sheriff’s Office
Sheriff Troy Wolbersen asked the board to accept two donations to the sheriff’s office. A $50 donation from Tom Haase will be used to maintain the fitness room. An anonymous donation of $5,000 will be designated for the K-9 unit. The sheriff said donations are very appreciated.
The next county board meeting will be held June 19 at 1 p.m. It will be followed, at 3 p.m., by the Board of Appeal and Equalization Meeting.
