The Douglas County Board of Commissioners held a board meeting on Tuesday, October 21.

The director of the Douglas County Social Services Department, Tabitha Kremmin, led a presentation regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, more commonly known as SNAP.

Kremmin and her staff shared with commissioners what would happen if a federal shutdown caused the monthly benefit to cease. Commissioners heard that 2,137 individuals in Douglas County currently receive SNAP benefits. Households within certain income limits are eligible and the benefit is paid on an EBT card that can be used for food.

The Department of Children, Youth and Families is reaching out directly to recipients via text message and email regarding November benefits. Douglas County Social Services has created a flier for everyone to know where supplemental food is available in Douglas County on a regular basis.

Those opportunities include The Outreach Food Shelf at 1205 Lake Street in Alexandria. Appointments are required. People may call 320-762-8411.  The United Way Food Drop takes place in Alexandria every other month. Registration is required. Go to uwdp.org or call 320-834-7800. Ruby’s Pantry is a monthly food drop at The Church in the Pines in Alexandria. They ask people to register in advance and suggest a $25 donation. Go to rubyspantry.org for more information.

All these organizations also take financial donations from members of the public. The Outreach Food Shelf says money is the most efficient and effective option for them right now. It saves on the labor of having to sort through small amounts of food donations.

Commissioners also approved a new vehicle for the Veterans Service Office. The vehicle is used to provide transportation to medical appointments for veterans. The existing vehicle was totaled in a rear end crash recently. Veterans Service Officer Jake Turner said insurance would cover part of the cost and he has received some unsolicited and very generous contributions toward the cost of a new vehicle. Commissioners approved funding the remaining cost.

The next board meeting will be Tuesday, November 4 at 9 a.m.
